Tour de France North – Normandy (Part 1)

Back again in France. A cycling tour from Honfleur, through Normandy and Brittany, at the Loire to Orléans via Paris back to Honfleur.

For the first time I am travelling by car and bike. There is no pleasant train connection from Hamburg to France. All roads lead to Paris. And by plane the cost of the bike are almost more expensive than the ticket itself. In addition, the flexibility increases when there is no fixed end date.

Most of the way to Honfleur I am looking for the source of the annoying cracking sound at the rear of the car. I finally locate and eliminate it in Belgium. Apart from that the ride is very straightforward, the rear bicycle rack is a great thing.

At Le Havre, I have to pass the Pont de Normandie, a huge bridge over the Seine River. Beautiful view and very windy, luckily I’m sitting in the car and not on the bike. Just behind the bridge I reach Honfleur and visit the Tourist Information Centre to find out where I can leave my Mini Cooper the next two weeks . Well, no chance, no space.

Tour de France North – back home

Arc de Triomphe on bike

I visited France for 14 days and cycled through the North, from the English Channel to the Bay of Biscay and along the Loire to the Capital. Besides the planning I took the train already in Orléans.

It was a nice tour, sometimes very exhausting because of bad weather and tough slopes. Once again my gear was excellent, no failures at all.

At the end I cycled about 1025 km in 11,5 days. My Review and pictures are in the works. You can get a brief glimpse from the following pictures posted on tour via Instagram.

Gear Update

Roeckl idstein

Roeckl Idstein

For the next tour I updated my gear. The bike gloves are a neverending story. The inside softens and breaks when riding long times in rain. I will try a premium product for the last time, the Roeckl Idstein. The marketing statement is:

“Idstein is an extremely technical short-fingered glove, developed for ambitious riders with high expectations regarding functionality and comfortable fit.”

My mobile kitchen is getting some new Nalgene and Ortec container suitable for travel. Due to lack of standards between the gas cartridges producers I bought the Edelgrid valve cartridge adapter. In France, Campingaz cartridges which do not fit the Trangia are sold mostly. But probably a Primus 450g cartridge will last for two weeks.

In addition, I test the Nordisk Spacemaker “Durin”.

Open bag, put clothes in, close, roll, press air out -> small compressed package !!

The clothes even should stay wrinkle free.

Finally, the energy problem. The power supply is difficult apart from hotels etc. At campsites you don’t want to charge your equipment unattended for several hours. My mobile phone and the gps unit will be charged by the Zzing. But this isn’t compatible with the special battery for the Canon EOS 500 D. Now I’ve found the Pixo, which can charge these rechargeable batteries and is powered via USB by the Zzing charger also, very nice. Nevertheless, the original chargers have to be packed for security.

Hamburg Port Anniversary 2012

Annually highlife at the port of Hamburg. Many sailing, cruising and naval ships as well as  about one million people are visiting the Hanseatic City. The whole port area, “Hafenmeile”, is overcrowed during the parades. This year I enjoyed the opening arrival parade on the Elbe. I was sailing with the Russian Windjammer MIR.

Starting in the morning at the “Landungsbrücken” sailing up the Elbe towards Stade. At noon we turned and joined the parade back to the port. Nice trip guided by the greetings from the spectators on shore.

There was plenty to discover on the MIR: the muster of the crew, the rigging, setting and taking in sails and a small talk with an officer. Surely, I took some photos.
